Cobalt and the Periodic Table

Cobalt is the 27th element on the periodic table. The number of an element on the periodic table is the same as the amount of protons in the nucleus of an atom of the element. Elements on the periodic table have a symbol to represent them, an atomic mass, an atomic number (the number of the element), and a mass number. For cobalt, these are:

Cobalt

Symbol- Co

Atomic Mass- 58.933

Atomic Number- 27

Mass Number- 59

Elements have two masses: the atomic mass and the mass number. The atomic mass in about how much an atom of the element weighs in amu, or atomic measurement units. The mass number is the atomic mass rounded to the nearest ones place and also the total amount of protons and neutrons in an atom of the element. The atomic number is the total number of protons in an atom of the element and the symbol is to make it easier to solve equations involving elements.Element atoms also have particles known as electrons. Protons, neutrons, and electrons arre all found in an atom of an element.
